About two years ago I was in the market for a new car. At the time gas prices were approaching $3.00/gallon, which at that time was the end of the world for just about everyone in the country. Kind of ironic considering Chrysler, Jeep Dodge dealers are currently offering gas cards guaranteeing $2.99/gallon gas prices for 3 years and that is considered a HUGE deal!

Anyways, I took a considerably close look at hybrid vehicles. In 05 there were really only two options I was looking at. The Toyota Prius and the Honda Civic Hybrid.

I liked the Prius. It was a very futuristic car and with salesmen touting 60mpg around it was tough to ignore. The Civic Hybrid was nice too, but it just didn’t do it for me (I like things that stand out in a crowd).

So the Pro’s

Cutting edge hybrid technology

Design concept that turns heads

45-60 mpg!

Cons

$22k price tag!

Less than potent 1.5 liter engine

60mpg rating only in very heavy stop and go situations

Did I mention the $22k PRICE TAG!

So why didn’t I buy it?

Simple… The fuel savings you get from the hybrid technology would take over a decade to pay for the 22k price tag. It was cool to see the technology out there but the cost to have it just didn’t make sense, I was trying to SAVE money!

Oh yeah AND I would have had to wait 6 months to get the car cause there was a waiting list! NO THANKS!
